Child Development & Parenting: Middle (8-11)

Middle Childhood Parenting Conclusion

Angela Oswalt Morelli , MSW

Group at beginning of walk_2814image by James Emery (lic)This document has provided parents and caregivers with concrete, everyday knowledge and suggestions for caring for school-aged children in middle-childhood (between ages 8 to 11 years old). It provided information on how parents can safely and expertly meet their children's basic needs such as nutrition, sleeping, clothing, hygiene, medical care, safety, education, privacy needs, and discipline. We have provided parents with tips and suggestions for coping with difficult situations that children may experience during this developmental stage, such as death, divorce, remarriage and blended families, children's early romantic attachments and "crushes", moving to a new home, sibling rivalry, bullying, prejudice and the temptations to use cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. Armed with this knowledge, even novice parent or caregivers can feel confident and secure in their parenting abilities.
